Texas state fair 2011

We went to the state fair this morning. James took a half day and came with us. The highlights were the 1200 lb pig and free ice cream. Fyi On Wed if you take 3 cans of food you get in for 2 dollars. They also had a fun kid zone where you get to pretend to be farmers and a cool show with dogs doing tricks and of course you can't leave without checking out the live stock. It was so much fun we are planning
On going again next year.

Bellas preschool

Bella had her first day of preschool away from our home today. We are doing another coop with two other moms this year. It was so fun seeing her be confident and excited about having her own "thing". Her and Luke do everything together and are best friends which is so wonderful! but because of that Bella depends a lot on Luke sometimes in social settings so it great for her to be able to have this experience on her own. Luke was feeling left out at first since he loved doing preschool last year but that quickly changed when he saw how much fun and special it is to spend time with just mommy (and Royce) the brownies i made him also helped him.

Kindergarten

I haven't posted much on homeschooling because to be honest things have just been going so fast lately I have barely had time to sit and think about it. I know we made the right choice for our family and for Luke and I also know that its not the right choice for everyone. Luke was a little resentful at first because all his closest friends started kindergarten this year and he thought they were going off to an all day playdate. We quickly clarified this when we had a pretend kindergarten at home where he sat at the kitchen table and had to pretend he was in real school and when I gently explained that going on work trips with daddy would be out of the picture he quickly announced he liked homeschool but he since argues that he is not a real kindergartener because he is homeschooled. Things have been good, we have had some ups and down but they are starting to level off as we get in the swing of things. I know I have said this before but I have and will still have to learn not to expect so much out of Luke. I sometime expect perfection and have to take two steps back and realize he is only 5, luckily (and unluckily for Luke) Bella and Royce benefit from these experiences. Right now our schedules are like this.

We have A days and B day and Fridays are early out day so we stop lessons after handwriting.

A day

  • Devotional 15min+
  • Chores 1 hour (more so I can accomplish things in the morning but he does help out with laundry, mopping, feeding the animals, dishes, bed making, ect.)
  • Phonics 15mins+
  • Reading (me reading to them) 30mins+
  • Snack
  • Math 15mins+
  • Handwriting 15mins+
  • Science 15min+
  • Music 15mins+
  • Lunch 30mins
  • Recess 30mins
  • Physical fitness 30mins+
B Day is the same but after handwriting we do
  • History 15mins+
  • Latin 15mins+
  • Lunch 30mins
  • Recess 30mins
  • Art 30mins+
This is the ideal and obviously its not going to be perfect. Despite my love of following a schedule it has been really nice to see Luke get really excited about a subject and being able to dive in. This afternoon he was really enjoying writing (which previously was a struggle) he sat at the table by his own will and practiced for an hour and half. Its great being able to be flexible with our studies and to let him really develop a love for learning. That has been one of my greatest hopes in homeschooling him. I just hope that I have the patience and inspiration to guide him the way he is suppose to go. I guess that is where prayer comes into play.

this is his activities chart he made during art today. As he accomplishes each task he moves the little straw that is on the yarn from the do side to the done. It helps me and him keep track of what he is suppose to get done.

We went on a field trip to the Zoo with another homeschooling family a few weeks ago, its really nice having people to relate with as we venture into this new realm. (Royce was stealing this babies cracker LOL the other kid wasn't to happy!)

Poor Royce

Just pulled the piano bench over on himself. It must have really hurt because I have never heard him cry like that. To add injury to insult he wacked his head earlier while crawling and cut his top gum with his bottom teeth. Rough day.

Sleepover

Lately the children (mostly Bella) have wanted to sleep with me when James is gone. Though I have attempted to keep them in there beds at some point or another in the night they all three have been ending up in mine, and sleeping with a 5, 3 year old and 7 month old does not equal a good nights sleep. So this is what I did the other night. I also brought in the pack n play for Roy.

Fast Sunday

Funny conversation with Luke tonight. We were talking about fast Sunday and I said "on fast Sunday we don't eat for 2 meals and we give that money so people who can't afford food can have something to eat." Luke responded with "Yeah! And on slow Sundays we get to eat all three meals." LOL.

Bats in Austin

We are in Austin for the BUY game this weekend. James, his dad Marc, his brother Joe are going. We decided to take advantage of the Friday night and go and see the thousands of bats that fly out from under Congress brigde every night at dusk. Very cool minus the poop we got on us when we were trying to look at them from under the bridge. It was a better view from the top of the bridge. We stayed for about 30 mins and they were still coming out. Definatelt recommended.

HOUSTON

We went on a work trip with James this week and found some time to drive around his old stomping grounds. James move to Houston (Spring TX) from Colorado when he was in elementary school and finished off high school there. He lived approx 1 mile from the temple but of course that wasn't here when they 0first moved in. An interesting story is that the house that James is standing in front is not the original house they moved into. That house got hit by lightening when he was in high  school and they got to build a new one. A blessing in disguise. It's been fun watching James get to relive some memories and letting the kids play at his old elementary school.

Our new pool

We got an indoor pool. Well kind of. Lol. End of summer clearance at Target only $35. We set it up in the shop because 1 it was level ground and 2 we can lock the doors so the kids can't get to it. We are filling it up right now. Should b good times! And don't worry grandma its only 30in so Bella head standing up is above water.

Baby for sale

Lol I would never sale him. He is just to cute.

Baby shoes

I have such mixed feelings about baby shoes and have long since stopped buying them. They are such a pain and pretty much usless, but seriously cute. These little red converse r some we have had since Luke and are one of the only pairs that stay put. Royce loves them. It's like having a permanent toy attached to his foot.

Time for a change

The pictures say it all.

This is the first time I have had shorter hair in 10 years. Poor James hasn't seen it yet he left on a work trip and wont be back till tonight. I know he loves long hair but I am sure he will like this too and if he doesn't he will pretend to!

Silly sleeper

I just went to check on the kids before I went to bed and this is what I found. Lol!

Smoothies

So the past few morning I have hardly been able to drink my breakfast smoothie due to Royce's insistently wanting to drink it. So this morning I made him his own and he was a happy camper. We also headed to the beach this afternoon. Boy was it hot, we really enjoyed the water.

The sweetest thing

It doesn't get better than this.

Royce's new silly face

This kid cracks me up. He started making this new face today. He also has two new teeth cutting through, I think its the two top fangs. Yikes! Hopefully no more biting will occur. We are looking forward to many sleep full nights to follow!

Please Help. Tragic

The Pease family was in a tragic car accident Wednesday, August 17, 2011, which left the mother badly injured, and sent their beautiful, little Adria back to live with her Heavenly Father. The family has limited medical insurance. If you would like to make a donation to help them in this difficult time, click on the link below or go to any Wells Fargo bank and ask to donate to the Pease Family Memorial Fund. The family is grateful for all your thoughts and prayers.

These are our dear friends from when we lived in California. I held Adria the day they brought her home from the hospital. She was the same age as our Bella. Please help their family if you can, ever little bit helps! Please keep them in your prayers.

Daddys away dinners

I have to admit that when James is out of town I get really lazy about cooking. The kids don't want to eat what I make most of the time and to spend that much time cooking just for myself isn't worth it to me. So we usually do something easy. To give an example this is what dinner looked like last night. Between Luke and Bella they ate half a watermelon. Lol! I did however try to feed them some chili and they weren't interested.

Cowboy story time

We went to cowboy storytime yesterday and the kids really enjoyed it. They especially liked seeing allthe kids dressed like cowboys. Here r a couple pics of them in the cowboy hats they made.

Luke's Half a Decade Birthday Party

We had Luke's birthday party. The kids had lots of fun! When I asked Luke what his favorite part was he said the water balloon fight (which lasted all of 2 minutes). Poor James spent and hour and a half blowing them up but it was worth it to see their happy little faces!

When I asked what Luke wanted to have for his birthday party he said he wanted Dinosaurs and pizza, so that's what he got. This cake has simple instructions here is the how to video.

Our water feature made out of PVC pipes so easy. Took like a half an hour and less that $5 to make. We called it the dinosaur wash.

James was my awesome go to guy. He was such a great help!

This is a family favorite and it seriously took 15mins to make. Here is the recipe

Water pinata. Lesson learned: stab at the bag with the broom stick dont try and whack it. It wont break.
